BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet
A 3-year PhD scholarship within the area of Physical Chemistry and Bioscience is available at the Department of Chemistry, Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The project is based on a collaboration between DTU Chemistry, DTU Chemical Engineering, Novozymes A/S and the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Michigan State University.
We will study the behaviour of enzymes at gas-liquid interfaces (bubbles). Bubbles are frequently encountered in reactors – here, enzymes get into direct contact with gas bubbles when for instance substrate gases such as oxygen are pumped into reactors. Adsorption of an enzyme to gas-liquid interfaces can cause unfolding of the enzyme and hence, losing its function. We shall employ computational simulation techniques to study the behaviour of enzymes at a gas-liquid interface by monitoring changes in structural and dynamic enzyme properties upon adsorption at for instance bubbles of different size and composition.
The results extracted from these simulations will be correlated to experimental data provided by the collaborator at DTU Chemical Engineering. Experiments are performed under specific experimental conditions in a specifically designed reactor to map amount/size of gas bubbles with the maintenance of enzyme activity (i.e., stability).
The correlations between experimental and simulation results will be used to develop a new predictive tool that allows to predict the maintenance of enzyme activity under given conditions. This collaboration also provides the opportunity to be partly involved in the experimental work.
The opening will be available from 1 October 2023.
Responsibilities and qualifications
Applicants should hold a Master of Science degree in Chemistry, Computational Science, or an equivalent background that provides a strong basis of computational techniques and bioscience.
In addition, the candidate should have:
- a strong interest in working in a cross-disciplinary environment and excellent collaboration skills,
- strong communication skills and a strong academic record is an advantage,
- excellent communication skills in written and spoken English are essential.
The candidate should be prepared for a stay at Michigan State University, U.S.A. for several months.
The applicant should strive towards scientific excellence, be ambitious and hard-working. Only applicants with great talent, which seek to be among the brightest in their field, will be considered.
The experimental part of the project will be undertaken via the collaboration at DTU Chemical Engineering. It is not essential the candidate has experimental skills, but it would nevertheless be desirable.
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education
