Do you want to be involved in the green energy transition? Do you wish to contribute to the development of E-mobility integration and are you looking for a career in R&D or academia? Then we have an opportunity!

We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled candidate to join us as PhD scholar.

DTU Wind and Energy Systems is a world-leading wind energy department that puts knowledge to work through cutting-edge research, innovation and development of technology. We have internationally leading research environments, and we prioritize strong cross-disciplinary collaborations within DTU, with leading international universities and facilities, and with private companies. We have a strong focus on the development of wind energy as the backbone of the future energy system and collaborate with the full sector.

You will be part of an international team carrying out research in the E-mobility and prosumer integration section.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The PhD project is part of the European research project FLOW: F lexible energy systems L everaging the O ptimal integration of EVs deployment W ave. www.theflowproject.eu/ .

The FLOW project involves 26 partners from 9 countries and tests, validates and enhances user-centric vehicle-to-everything (V2X) smart charging solutions. These solutions include highly replicable user-centric products, concepts, configurations and mechanisms to optimise operation. FLOW demonstrates effective grid integration of EVs to support large-scale penetration of renewables and alleviate grid challenges. These solutions are tested in 5 demonstrations in Czech Republic, Ireland, Italy, Denmark, and Spain covering a wide range of applications.

The PhD student is expected to collaborate closely with the other members – internal and external – of the FLOW project. The PhD project objective is to investigate how the power system can be proactively prepared for urban EV charging while exploring the charging flexibility that EVs may provide through smart and future proof charging infrastructure.

Your primary tasks will be:

  • Plan and manage your PhD project in collaboration with supervisors.
  • Review and identify technological, economic, and regulatory barriers to the implementation of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology.
  • Quantify the improvement produced by the application of bidirectional V2G charging to unidirectional V1G charging.
  • Contributing to laboratory testing to quantify the impact of V2G on the battery.
  • Participate in preparing and carrying out demonstrations where different smart charging strategies are implemented.

A detailed project plan will be developed with the supervisors within the first two months after enrolment.

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) in engineering, natural sciences or similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a Master’s degree. The successful candidate has an education in a relevant engineering field or computer/data science and is motivated to specialize in electrical power systems.

Candidates are required to have:

  • Excellent grades in your master program
  • Dedication and the desire to learn
  • Ability to present results in technical reports and prepare scientific papers
  • Programming skills (MATLAB and/or Python)
  • Interest in practical testing and analysis of experimental results
  • Knowledge of power systems operation and electric vehicles
  • Ability to work in a project team and take responsibility for own research goals
  • Excellent in communicating and reporting in English

The successful candidate must also fulfill the requirements for admission to a PhD program at DTU.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU.
